Redistricting Advisory from SD Unified

Parents and Community Members,

Although the following information has no impact on your child's school, we wanted to make sure you are aware of an important redistricting process underway at San Diego Unified School District.

The Board of Education has initiated a redistricting process that will balance the populations of the five Board of Education sub districts using 2010 Census data as required by law. The Board has appointed a five member Redistricting Advisory Committee to create a recommended map with new sub district boundaries, balancing population and considering communities of interest and ethnic populations.

Since the 2000 Census, population change at San Diego Unified has been relatively small, but changes are needed to reduce the population of Sub District C and to increase the population of Sub Districts D and E. The initial recommended map includes fairly minor boundary adjustments and will only change the Board representation for three elementary schools: Grant, Chesterton and Clay.

It is important to note that changes to Board member sub-district boundaries DO NOT impact school attendance boundaries or high school feeder patterns. This redistricting only changes the election boundaries of school board sub districts. It does not impact school or district operations in any way.

The Redistricting Advisory Committee has scheduled their next meeting for Tuesday, August 23, at 6 p.m., at Clay Elementary School, located at 6506 Solita Ave. (92115). Public comment is invited. A copy of the initial Board sub-district map with changes being considered can be viewed at www.sandi.net/redistrict . This webpage also includes information about the Redistricting Advisory Committee and Census data used to balance the populations of the sub district areas.
